Description

The Porta da Sole is one of the ancient entrances to the castle of Altidona (13th-14th century). Initially called Porta da Capo, it later took its current name due to its southern exposure. Over the centuries, it has undergone modifications, including the demolition of part of the castle walls. In the 1600s, the space adjacent to the door was used for “sfumio,” a sanitization treatment involving immersion in smoke, believed to be a deterrent against the plague.
